High-End Swinger Event Dress Code: What to Wear to a Play Party
I remember booking our very first high-end swinger event. We had two months to prepare, and even though the event description said black tie and included a few style examples, we still stressed about our outfits more than I'd like to admit. Because it didn't feel like the usual black tie kind of night. Or at least that's what we thought.
These days we're far more confident about what's expected, so we spend that energy on the details instead. Most events are built around a theme, and coming up with outfits that follow the dress code but still let us shine as a couple has become one of my favourite parts of the preparation. We've dressed for everything from Gatsby to Venetian carnival, from vampires to Greek gods and goddesses. Never in a costume-party way though, but instead keeping it classy and sensual.
So let's go through it properly. What the dress code at these events actually looks like, what black tie means in practice for both of you, what I'd invest in first and the mistakes that can leave you standing outside.
Why the Dress Code Matters
The first time you see fifty couples arrive dressed with real care, you understand why organisers insist on it. Everything feels deliberate and cinematic, a world away from an ordinary night out. You're not just attending something special. You're helping create it.
Your outfit also does some talking before you do. It tells the organisers and every couple you meet that you've understood the world you're stepping into.
What “Black Tie” Actually Means at a Libertine Event
Many of the most exclusive swinger events follow a black tie dress code. Here's what that means in practice.
For him
A tuxedo or a dark suit with a crisp shirt, polished shoes and often a bow tie. So nothing too complicated. But one thing I'd stress is tailoring. A mid-range suit that fits perfectly will always beat an expensive one that doesn't, so book that fitting well before the event.
And remember that a tuxedo doesn't always mean the same black one you've seen a hundred times. There's space to get creative with fabrics (velvet can work beautifully), colours (dark blue instead of black) and shoes (elegant loafers instead of the traditional polished leather). All of it still counts as black tie, and it adds personality to the outfit. Especially when there's a themed dress code (more on that below).
For her
This is where you have far more freedom, and where quality shows. Floor-length gowns or fitted cocktail dresses with clean structure and sensual details... an open back, a dramatic silhouette, flowing materials. The dress should make you feel like the best version of yourself the moment you put it on.
One thing to forget entirely: the cheap, ultra-revealing outfits sold on mass-market adult websites. They have no place at these events, and they'll work against you at the door. Elegance and allure win over shock value every single time.
Personally, I love to wear black to most of our events. It's timeless, and with the right accessories you can still decide exactly how much attention you want.
Lingerie: Always Think in Two Layers
At these events, lingerie is the second half of your outfit. The gown carries you through drinks, dinner and the first hours of conversation. When the night moves toward the playrooms and the layers start to drop, your lingerie is what you're actually wearing. So choose it with the same care you gave the dress.
I often build the outfit from the inside out, choosing the lingerie first, then making sure the dress sits smoothly over it. A backless gown answers your bra question for you, and a high slit will show exactly where your stockings end, so plan for that on purpose. Stick to timeless colours like black, deep red or ivory unless the theme invites something more playful.
Themed Dress Codes
Very often the black tie base is combined with a specific theme, and some organisers get remarkably detailed: a required colour, a mask, particular materials, even instructions about hosiery or accessories. These details are always in the event description, and they're not suggestions. So skimming isn't an option.
Read the event description when you book, then read it again a few weeks before, when you're actually packing. If anything is unclear, write to the organiser and ask. A thoughtful question ahead of time is always better than a misstep at the door.
The Things I'd Invest in First
For her
If you're just starting out in this lifestyle, these are the three purchases I'd make before anything else. Trust me, you don't want to be figuring these out last minute.
1. A high-quality lingerie set. Everything from the lingerie section above applies. If you buy one thing first, make it this.
2. A very good pair of heels. You'll be in them all night, so they need to be high and at least somewhat comfortable. My go-to is Christian Louboutin's So Kate in 100mm.
And never wear new heels for the first time at an event. Break them in at home for a few evenings first. Your feet will thank you at 2am.
3. A sleek but functional clutch. Something elegant that works with most of your outfits and still holds your essentials.
For him
If you don't feel like getting too creative with your outfit and simply want to follow the dress code, then a well-tailored tuxedo or dark suit, a crisp shirt and properly polished shoes will carry you through almost any event description. You can add personality once you've seen a few of these evenings from the inside.
What Actually Gets Couples Turned Away at the Door
So what actually goes wrong at the door? These are the mistakes I've seen or heard about most often:
Treating “black tie” as a loose suggestion. Chinos and an open shirt won't get him through the door, no matter how expensive they were.
The wrong shoes. Trainers and casual footwear are the fastest way to be turned away. Les Chandelles in Paris is famous for this, and I covered their door policy in detail in my review of the club.
Focusing on labels. Some couples assume a designer name will buy them an exception to the dress code. It doesn't. A couple in well-chosen high street pieces who read the event description carefully will always be more welcome than a couple in designer clothes who didn't.
A Quick Word on Grooming
Your outfit is only part of the picture. What matters just as much is arriving polished, well-groomed and confident in your own skin.
For him, that means a fresh haircut or beard trim, tidy nails and a subtle fragrance. For her, whatever makes you feel put-together: a blowout, elegant makeup, a manicure and a few nights of proper sleep beforehand do more than any last-minute purchase.
Final Thoughts
Getting dressed for a high-end swinger event is part of the experience itself. The outfit planning, the packing, the time getting ready together at the hotel while the anticipation builds. Don't rush it, and don't treat it as a hurdle. It's one of the pleasures.
And if you're ever unsure, come back to the simplest rule there is: read the event description carefully, and when in doubt, dress up rather than down. If you want to be extra sure, reach out to the organiser. Nobody has ever been turned away for looking too elegant, and no organiser has ever minded a thoughtful question.
FAQ
What should I wear to my first swinger party? Read the dress code first. It's likely to be black tie or elegant evening wear, so as a minimum a cocktail dress and heels for women, and a dark suit or a tuxedo with leather shoes for men. Check the event description for themes.
Can you get turned away from an event for your clothes? Yes, but most people attending these events know the rules and dress up for the night. They understand that the clothes play a major role in the overall experience, and following the dress code shows respect for the effort the organiser has put into curating the event.
Do you have to undress at a swinger event? No. Some guests stay dressed all evening just observing. Events have play areas and what you wear or remove is entirely your decision.
What do men wear to high-end swinger events? A dark suit or a tuxedo, a crisp shirt and polished leather shoes.
Should we bring a change of clothes? Not in my experience.
